Viral video on social media exposed “easy availability of mobiles” inside Sangrur Jail
Sangrur, January 12: A viral video on social media has exposed the “easy availability of mobiles” inside the Sangrur Jail. The administration today confirmed that the video was prepared inside the jail but the jail authorities have denied allegations of the inmate. The latter had accused the authorities of demanding money and compelling him to sell drugs inside the jail.
Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori has written to senior jail department authorities to conduct an inquiry.
In a 2.16-minute video, the jail inmate alleges that after he refused to pay Rs 1.2 lakh to a jail official, he was lodged in a cramped cell, which did not even have basic facilities.
The inmate alleged that the official had been demanding money from him but he was from a poor family, so he could not arrange the money and was compelled to make do with a torn blanket.
When contacted, Sangrur Jail Superintendent Balwinder Singh confirmed that the video had been prepared in the jail. “We have started probe to ascertain how the mobile reached inside our jail. We have identified the inmate as Amit Bhura, who was transferred to Sangrur last month. Since he had been facing various cases and has enemies here, we have lodged him in a separate cell, as per norms. His allegations are baseless,” he said.
