Sukhbir says the person who commits sacrilege is a Rakshas
Chandigarh, May 9: Within hours of the Panthic organisations taking out march to Badal village and staging protest in front of residence of the Badals, Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal apparently repositioned himself on the sensitive issue of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib that is rocking the electoral discourse in the state.
Comparing the people behind sacrilege to demons, Sukhbir Singh Badal said: “ The person resorting to sacrilege is demon. Let the family of the person responsible for sacrilege be decimated and so should be the fate of the people politicising this issue ( Beadbi Karaon Wala Rakshash Hunda Hai. Mein Kahna Chahunda Han Ki Jinhen Vi Beadbi Karai, Usde Parvar Da Kakh Na Rahe Ate Jihre Beadbi Te Siast Kare Usde Parvar Da Vi Kakh Na Rahe”. This is from his Facebook wall under which his speech has been attached from one of his election meetings today in Faridkot constituency.
It may be mentioned that series of incidents relating to sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib took place in 2015 when chief minister was Parkash Singh Badal with Sukhbir as the deputy chief minister incharge of police department and thus directly accountable for the situation. This issue has returned to the centre stage of Punjab’s religio-political discourse. The worry of Badals is its impact on the electoral dynamics, especially in Malwa as its effect is discernible in the constituenices from Mohali to Mamdot.
The issue is now getting snowballed adding to the worries of House of Badals as two members of the family are in fray from Bathinda and Ferozepur. Sukhbir has his wife Harsimrat are contesting from Ferozepur and Bathinda respectively.
This issue has eclipsed the non-performance of Capt Amarinder Singh government.
Badal family is apparently rattled by this narrative and hence this what can be described as defensively offensive posture.
However, the issue needs answers both from father and son. Besides the government action at that time, this also involves the denigration of both Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. These highest Sikh institutions were roped in by Badals to pardon Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh of the blasphemy charge. He had been indicted by Akal Takht and Sikhs had been directed to boycott this sect.
The investigation into sacrilege cases is still to be taken to logical conclusion wth some of the key people are absconding. Gurmit Ram Rahim is in Haryana jail. The attempt by Punjab probe team to question him in jail was thwarted by the BJP ruled Haryana government.
Temperature on the issues relating to sacrilege continues to rise every day with the Panthic organisations making last ditch effort to dislodge Badals from control of religio-political dynamics of the Sikhs. The task is stupendous.
The Congress strategists are clear that Badals can be hit in the electoral domain with this weapon in the absence of unanswered questions.
Sukhbir has rightly maintained that those responsible for this heinous crime be decimated but at the same time, he should fill the gaps in this narrative.
