Punjab shines in National Sports honours
– Shooter Anjum Moudgill, Athlete Tejinder Pal Singh Toor & Footballer Gurpreet Singh Sandhu recommended for ‘Arjuna Award’
Chandigarh, August 18: “The resurgence of Punjab in the sporting arena is around the corner as is evident from the list announced for the National Sports honours such as the Arjuna Award as well as the Dronacharya Award. The day is not far off when Punjab courtesy the pro-active sports initiatives of the present State Government, would reclaim its numero uno spot as the sports powerhouse of the country.”
Disclosing this here today in a press communiqué, the Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi said that the fact that 3 players from Punjab namely Shooter Anjum Moudgill, Athlete Tejinder Pal Singh Toor (Shotput) and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (Football) have been recommended for the prestigious ‘Arjuna Award’ makes the heart of every Punjabi swell with pride. The minister also congratulated the Athletics coach Mr. Mohinder Singh Dhillon for being recommended for the coveted ‘Dronacharya Award’.
Divulging more, the minister said that it is also heartwarming to note that in the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy (MAKA), the top 3 positions went to the Universities of Punjab with Panjab University, Chandigarh bagging the top honour followed by the Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Amritsar and the Punjabi University Patiala respectively in the 2nd and 3rd places.
Congratulating the award winners on their marvelous achievements, Rana Sodhi exhorted them to now go all out and set their sights on the Mission Tokyo Olympics-2020 and assured all support from the side of the Punjab Government.
