Former Moga SSP Charanjit Sharma arrested in Behbal Kalan firing case

Chandigarh, January 27: Former Moga senior superintendent of police Charanjit Singh Sharma was arrested from his house in Hoshiarpur on early morning today in connection with the Behbal Kalan police firing case in which two persons protesting against sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib were killed.
A Special Investigation Team inquiring into the incidents arrested him around 4.30 am.
It may be mentioned that the SIT had earlier summoned him to appear before it for probe on January 29 at Fariodkot in this case.
However, he was nabbed today morning as the police got the hint that he was planning to escape abroad.
Sharma, along with three other police officials, had moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court has challenging the constitution of the SIT. The court turned down their plea on January 24, asking them to join the investigation.
After recording statements of over 200 persons in the past four months in the police firing incidents at Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura, the SIT was waiting for the High Court to vacate the stay in proceedings against five police officers, including former Fazilka SP Bikramjit Singh and former Moga SSP Charanjit Singh Sharma.
The police are also learnt to have also carried out raids to arrest others.
It is pertinent to mention that this headed by ADGP Prabodh Kumar SIT is investigating mainly the Kotkapura and Behbal firing cases .
The probe in the cases relating to sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahin is with the other SIT headed by DIG R S Khatra.
