Fazilka police nabbed 338 drug peddlers in 6 months
Fazilka, Dec 30: The Fazilka police nabbed a record number of 338 drug peddlers, registering 248 cases under the NDPS Act, from July 20 this year, said SSP Bhupinder Singh.
Giving details about the arrests and seizures of drugs at the end of the year, the SSP said the district police, during its anti-drug campaign, seized 12-kg heroin, 1,313-kg poppy husk, 6.390-kg opium, 459-gm narcotic powder, 10.340-gm ganja, 10-gm smack, 1,51,870 intoxicating pills and capsules, 100 injections and five bottles of syrup. Besides, Rs 3,61,100 has been seized as drug money.
SSP Bhupinder Singh further said the Abohar police today seized 400-gm heroin, worth Rs 2 crore in the international market, from two drug peddlers, namely Sunny and Vipin Kumar, both of Abohar today. Besides, two mobile phones and a Maruti car have also been seized.
Fazilka is considered to be a sensitive district as peddlers try to smuggle heroin from Pakistan into the Indian territory and other contraband, like poppy husk, from Rajasthan through this point.
“The police have to remain more vigilant in this area. Special nakas (checkpoints) have been laid in Abohar subdivision bordering Rajasthan to keep a check on smuggling activities. Buses coming from Rajasthan are being searched regularly and the drivers and conductors have been asked to provide information about suspicious activities,” he said.
According to him, meetings with police heads of adjoining districts of Sriganganagar, Hanumangarh in Rajasthan and Sirsa in Haryana are conducted at regular intervals to curb smuggling and carry out joint raids at smugglers’ hideouts.
The police also organised a large number of seminars in schools, colleges and villages to sensitise people on the ill-effects of drugs.
