Congress MP from Amritsar Gurjeet Singh Aujla on Thursday demanded in the Lok Sabha a Special Economic Zone status for Amritsar to give boost to industrialisation.

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour, he said that there has been an alarming shifting or winding up of industrial units in Amritsar.

In the year 2000, the number of units was more than 20,000. Till last year, the number has reduced to about 10,000.

Earlier, during Question Hour he asked of the government as to when would the transmission tower in Amritsar become functional.

He said that although the tower was completed in 2013, the same has not become operational.

He said the tower was sanctioned along with similar towers in Amethi and Rae Bareli in 2007 by the then UPA government. A sum of about Rs 20 crore has already been spent on the project, he added.
