Cong govt running away from SC monitored probe into sacrilege cases: SAD – BJP

(Dhindsa and Majithia say govt got adjournment motion rejected unfairly)

(Say AAP acting like Chhoti Congress in assembly)

Chandigarh, August 5 – The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) – Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislative parties today said the Congress government was running away from a Supreme Court monitored probe into cases of sacrilege by getting the adjournment motion submitted by the SAD in this regard rejected on unsubstantiated grounds.

Addressing newsmen at the Vidhan Sabha here, SAD legislative party leader Parminder Singh Dhindsa and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia said democratic norms and parliamentary procedure were set aside by rejecting the adjournment motion whose sole objective was to demand a Supreme Court monitored inquiry into the cases of sacrilege at Burj Jawahar Singhwala and Bargari. “Speaker Rana KP Singh rejected the adjournment motion despite the fact that it was delivered to his office by SAD president’s Political Secretary Charanjit Singh Brar well before the two hour deadline for submission of the same. Moreover the resolution was delivered to the Speaker after the assembly Secretary advised the same”.

Mr Dhindsa and Mr Majithia said the very fact that the Congress party was running away from discussion on the most sensitive issue of sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji indicated that it did not want to truth to come out and did not want justice to be delivered in the case. The leaders said recent events including a directionless inquiry, different versions submitted by various SIT members and even the chief minister and the Advocate General had made people suspicious about the intentions of the Congress government. “This is why we have demanded that the Supreme Court should monitor the inquiry”, the leaders said adding they were baffled why the government was now running away from meeting this demand. They said earlier both former Congress President Rahul Gandhi and then PCC president Capt Amarinder Singh were on record demanding a SC inquiry into the entire episode. “Even former mp Partap Singh Bajwa has made a similar demand”, they said.

The SAD leaders said it was also shocking that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had openly sided with the Congress party while opposing discussion on the adjournment motion. They said it was now clear to Punjabis that AAP was in fact a ‘Chhoti Congress’ which was being dictated and directed by the ‘Waddi Congress’ (Congress party). “Both parties are now in cahoots with each other and are playing a fixed match. AAP is being paid back with the Speaker putting on hold the certain disqualification of five legislators who have resigned with AAP as well as propping up Harpal Cheema as the leader of opposition”.

Stating that the issue was linked with peace in Punjab, the SAD legislative party leader said “we only wanted a discussion on the issue so that the assembly could unanimously pass the resolution ensuring a Supreme Court monitored probe into the sacrilege incidents. We fail to understand why discussion could not be held on such an important issue. The Congress party has exposed itself by going against the wishes of all Nanak Naam Leva sangat which wants a speedy inquiry and strict punishment for all those who indulged in the most heinous sacrileges. The SAD will continue to raise this issue and do its best to ensure the guilty are brought to justice”.

Meanwhile Mr Majithia also exposed the Congress contention that the adjournment motion was not as per rules. He said the resolution fulfilled all conditions pointed out by the Speaker for rejecting it under the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.. “It was given two hours in advance (Section 61 -1), it concerned a matter of recent occurrence (Section 61 -3) and it did not deal with a matter for which leave was refused in the same session (Section 61 -7)”, he added.

BJP legislator Arun Narang was also present at the press conference.
