Bargari Morcha chief Mand guarantees peace to counter Badal propaganda
Chandigarh, October 14: It was second massive turn out, mainly of the Sikhs, at Bargari to demand justice for the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib in 2015 when Akali Dal government headed by Parkash Singh Badal ruled Punjab.
Today was 3rd death anniversary of the killing of two persons-Krishan Bhagwan Singh and Gurjit Singh- when police opened unprovoked fire on people at Behbal Kalan protesting against sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib at nearby Bargari.
Importantly, Akal Takht parallel acting Jathedar Dhian Singh Mand who started the Bargari Insaff Morcha on June 1 last guaranteed peace to the people of Punjab in general and the Hindus in particular to confront the fear psychosis being triggered by Badal against the Morcha by slamming it as part of design to disturb communal peace.
He was the moderate influence as some speakers, as usual, tried to push their own agenda of Sikh state. It is a different matter that Akali Dal (Amritsar) chief Simranjit Singh Mann can’t gather himself even one thousand persons. He tries to take advantage of such situations.
Yet another major aspect was that Mand made it clear that the mediators had little rule and Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh would have to negotiate with him directly with final agreement to be announced at Bargari.
Moreover, he would not budge from any of the three demands that include action against culprits of sacrilege and police firing and release of Sikh political prisoners.
Bargari had witnessed massive gathering on October 7 that included march from Kotkapura to Bargari. It was the march that had jammed the highway. The gathering today at Bargari was almost the same as on October 7. The most striking aspect of the turnout is that it is voluntary as people make their own transport arrangements by pooling money to hire buses.
This morcha in the beginning was essentially against Badals as the major demand is the arrest of culprits. Badal’s son Sukhbir Singh Badal was the deputy chief minister holding home department in 2015 and thus both father and son were directly responsible for the law and order situation in the state. The arrest of the police chief Sumedh Singh Saini is being demand in case of police firing o0n protesters at Kotkapura and Behbal.
Not anymore. Capt Amarinder Singh is being perceived to be protecting Badals.
Badals retaliated by dubbing the organisers of the Bargari Morcha as agents of ISI and the Congress who had conspired to disturb communal harmony. The massive and peaceful turn out on October 7 and today has blunted this attack by Badals.
Mand today promised peace to the people in the state and said the real threat was from Badals and Capt Amarinder Singh government.
The talk of Khalistan by Simranjit Singh Mann was suppressed by the dominance of moderate discourse.
“The agitation would be taken to logical conclusion. We would not take to roads and all roads would ultimately converge to Bargari. Capt Amarinder Singh would be forced to come to Bargari to give justice and accept the three demands”, Mand asserted.
He clarified yet another aspect saying, “It is agitation on religious issue and there is no politics involved. None can defeat it”.
It is pertinent to mention that both groups of Aam Aadmi Party and Lok Insaaf Party are trying to capitalise on this mobilisation.
He was clear that it would be a long drawn battle and this was just the beginning.
He electrified the gathering when he said, “I assure you that Akal Takht Jathedar Jagtar Singh Hawara would be released and that very day, I would hand over this office to him”.
Hawara is in jail in the case of murder of chief minister Beant Singh in 1995.
The signal was clear that Mand has centralised the command and he would negotiate himself.
